Our History

MyState Financial, was formed on 1 July 2007 after the majority of the 144,000 connectfinancial and islandstate members voted ‘yes’ to proposed the merger, creating the largest Tasmanian-owned financial institution.

islandstate was the culmination of 22 Credit Unions merging from across Tasmania over more than 35 years. From the creation of Postech in 1970, each of the following Credit Unions has joined to form what was known as islandstate.

Date Credit Union(s)
1975 MTT Credit Union, Tasgroup
1975 AISF, Claremont, Tastax/Federated Clerks Credit Union
1977 Charles Davis, Derwent
1978 Hospitals, Launceston Central, Schweppes Tulla
1979 Circular Head CU, Taspower, Trancom
1981 Mountsea, Papermakers, Taspac
1985 ACRUE/Coastal
1986 Cesami, Risdon/CUT
2000 Polish Credit Union
2001 CPS Credit Union

Each of these Credit Unions helped islandstate grow to provide financial services to more than 80,000 Tasmanians through 11 Finance Centres.

islandstate also provided financial planning advice to members and non-members through wholly owned islandstate Financial Planning, which was acquired in 2001.

connectfinancial and its forerunner Credit Unions provided financial services in Tasmania for over 47 years, starting with the formation of the Tasmanian Public Service Savings & Loans Co-operative Society in 1959. In the 1980s the renamed Savings & Loans Credit Union grew in size and strength merging with the Hobart City Council Credit Union in 1983, Campus Credit Union in 1988 and finally, the ABC Credit Union in 1996.

Meanwhile, the Teachers Credit Union, formed in 1964, combined with Police Credit Union (formed in 1965) to become Teachers and Police Credit Union in 1990.

Then, in 1998, the renamed Teachers Police & Nurses Credit Union merged with Savings & Loans Credit Union to become Connect Credit Union, which became connectfinancial in 2005.

At June 2007, the Connect Group encompassed:

  • Connect Credit Union of Tasmania Limited
  • The Gourmet Club Pty Ltd
  • Connect Asset Management Pty Ltd
  • Connect Community Foundation Limited.

Now as MyState Financial, with funds in excess of $1.8 billion, a proud Tasmanian heritage of servicing our members lives on within Tasmania.
